Ah, trends—one minute everyone’s doing the ice bucket challenge, and the next, you’re learning dances on TikTok that you’ll probably never use in real life (unless you plan on becoming a backup dancer for BTS). Trends can be fun and harmless, but as Christians, not every viral sensation is worth jumping into. Let’s explore why chasing every trend might not be the best idea and how we can stay grounded in what truly matters.
1. Trends don’t always point in the right direction
Trends can make you feel like you’re part of something bigger, like you’re in the know. But just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s right. Some trends push boundaries in ways that can lead us away from God’s truth. Whether it’s a challenge that encourages risky behavior or content that glorifies unhealthy lifestyles, these trends can pull us off course.
In Romans 12:2 (NIV), we’re told:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
This is a reminder that our guide shouldn’t be the latest viral challenge but God’s Word. So, next time a trend comes along, ask yourself: Does this align with who God calls me to be?
2. Chasing approval, losing yourself
Let’s be real—following trends often comes with a desire for likes, shares, and approval from others. We want to fit in, to be seen as cool or relevant. But if you’re constantly chasing the approval of people, you’ll miss the point of who you are in Christ. The truth is, trends fade, but God’s love for you is eternal.
In Galatians 1:10 (NIV), Paul asks:
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Spoiler alert: You’ll never keep up with every trend, and that’s okay! Trying to win over people who are fickle is like trying to nail jelly to a wall. Instead, focus on living for an audience of One—God.
3. You are more than your FYP (For You Page)
We live in a world where social media algorithms dictate what we see and do. Your FYP might be filled with viral dances, trending music, and funny memes. But remember—you are more than what’s on your screen. You are uniquely made, with a purpose that goes far beyond any fad.
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) says:
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
God didn’t create you to be a copy of the latest influencer. He made you to be you—creative, original, and designed for His plans. Following every trend can sometimes distract us from discovering the unique path God has laid out for us.
4. Have fun, but keep your filter on
Now, don’t get me wrong—trends can be fun. There’s nothing wrong with doing a funny challenge or trying out new things. The key is to keep your spiritual filter on. Ask yourself if this trend glorifies God or pulls you away from Him.
Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) gives us wise advice:
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Keeping our hearts in check helps us enjoy what’s good and avoid what can harm us spiritually.
Wrap up: Choose wisely, stay true
Trends come and go, but your faith in Jesus is eternal. So next time you’re tempted to jump on the latest bandwagon, take a moment to think: Is this trend leading me closer to God, or pulling me away? With a little wisdom and a lot of prayer, you can navigate the world of trends without losing yourself along the way.
And remember, it’s always better to be a trendsetter for Christ than just another follower of the crowd!
