What does it mean to be normal? It's all about being regular and plain - fitting easily into your external environment.

What is mean to be abnormal? It's the complete opposite of normality. It's about being unique, irregular and even extravagant or extreme.

So what does this normal/abnormal difference have to do with being a Christian?

John wasn't normal

Let's begin by taking a look at one of the Bible's 'abnormal' people, John the Baptist. John was a gift from God to his mother and father, for they were not expected to have children. He was even prophesied about by prophets way before his time.

Listen! It's the voice of someone shouting, "Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God!" (Isaiah 40:3)

The beginning of John's life is told in Luke 1:5-25. He had a godly mother and father, and grew into a godly man of God. Fast forward to about age 31, John was baptising folks who believed and repented. He saw and quickly realised his Messiah Jesus, and shouted "Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29).

In John's life, he no doubt had to confront many people for their sins and tell them to repent. While some people would have heard and listened carefully, others would have insulted him. And when he preached God's message of repentance and salvation, John didn't have a nice air-conditioned building or a smart suit. Nothing like that. He preached in the wilderness like many O.T. prophets (Matthew 3:1-3).

His clothing was different too.

John's clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist... (Matthew 3:4)

So were his meals.

... For food he ate locusts and wild honey. (Matthew 3:4)

It's good to be abnormal

In John's time, Israel was under the control of the Roman Empire, and many religious teachers strayed away from God's path. They didn't want the praise of God, but the praise of other people. John chose to follow God and therefore didn't receive much recognition as a chosen prophet of God. And in the end, He was arrested by Herod for being truthful, and eventually beheaded.

John's life was an example of true dedication to God. He submitted himself to God's will. Submission to God is trusting Him, giving yourself 100% over to Him. John was considered abnormal by many, but was considered faithful by God. He's the type of person that pleased God. In our own lives, we should be careful not to become too comfy, but be willing to become like John, and give up everything for God's sake.

God wants all of us to be a bit abnormal. He wants us to do what may seem odd in the eyes of this world. It could be loving your enemies, telling people about Jesus, or giving up your free time for those in need. Whatever it is, don't give into the pressure to be normal. God says you're far more special than that. Remain strong and continue serving Him, no matter how abnormal you feel.
