When people talk about God’s will, they often think of some hidden, secret plan that we need to discover. But God’s will isn’t a mystery. It’s already revealed in His Word, the Bible. While God’s will can sometimes include major decisions, it’s more about how we live every day. From the way we treat others to the choices we make, living in God’s will means aligning ourselves with His purposes and following the example of Jesus.
God’s will Is revealed in Scripture
The Bible is our guide to understanding God’s will. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Bible shows us how to live, love, and make decisions that honour God. Whether it’s choosing a career or making moral decisions, God has given us everything we need to know in His Word.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
(2 Timothy 3:16).
We don’t need to wait for special signs or experiences to know what God wants us to do. Instead, we use the Bible as our guide and trust that God will help us make wise choices. When we read Scripture, we understand His desires for our lives—like loving our neighbours (Matthew 22:39) and being faithful in small things (Luke 16:10).
Living according to God’s will
Following God’s will isn’t just about making big, life-changing decisions—it’s about the everyday choices we make. In Romans 12:2, Paul urges us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind,” which means making decisions that reflect the love and wisdom of God. Every time we choose to live in alignment with God’s Word, we are living in His will.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
(Romans 12:2)
As we grow in our faith, God helps us discern His will through the Holy Spirit, who teaches us to make godly choices. John 14:26 reminds us that the Holy Spirit will help us understand God’s will: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
Trusting God’s plan
Ultimately, knowing God’s will means trusting that He has a good plan for us. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Even when things don’t go as we expect, we can trust that God’s will is good, and He’s guiding us every step of the way.
Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us the key to trusting God: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
God’s will is not just a plan for our lives—it’s a way of living that reflects His love, wisdom, and goodness. As we grow in understanding of His Word and trust in His guidance, we can live confidently knowing that God is leading us in His perfect will.
